Plasminogen is a protein that plays a crucial role in the blood clotting process. It is produced by the liver and circulates in the blood. Plasminogen is inactive in its native form, but it can be converted into its active form, called plasmin, through a process known as fibrinolysis.

Fibrinolysis is the body's natural mechanism to dissolve blood clots. When a blood clot forms, plasminogen binds to it. Activators, such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), trigger the conversion of plasminogen into plasmin. Plasmin then breaks down the fibrin mesh of the blood clot, leading to its dissolution.

This process is important for maintaining proper blood flow and preventing excessive clot formation. Plasminogen and the fibrinolysis pathway are essential components of the body's hemostatic (blood clotting) and thrombolytic (clot dissolution) systems.
